The New York International Auto Show represented a big week for Nissan. To start with, Nissan unveiled the much anticipated NV200 Taxi, then they pulled the covers off the all-new 2012 Nissan Altima. They didn't just stop at introducing new vehicles though, they also gave the world a glimpse at their latest car technology: NissanConnect.
Partnerships with Google, Pandora Internet Radio and Intel allowed Nissan to create this new system, which they are aiming to completely change the world of driver connectivity. Nissan Motor Company CEO, Carlos Ghosn gave some insight as to why Nissan finds this project valuable, "It's clear that consumers expect to be connected wherever they are, and that includes the time spent in their automobiles. To meet those needs, Nissan is developing a series of innovative breakthroughs in communication devices that will be safe to use while driving."1
Its hard to believe, but as Ghosn pointed out, it was just 2 decades ago that the radio was all a driver had as a connection to the outside world while on the road. My how the world has changed with handless phones, GPS systems to navigate us, and personal systems to give us updates on things such as the weather. Nissan hopes to further develop these technologies to make them as safe as possible, with wireless and other cloud-based systems that will not only keep you connected but will help prevent accidents or even help keep your electric vehicle charged.
Working with Intel, a company widely regarded as an industry leader in computing, allowed for Nissan to really focus on making a reliable safe and advanced product. Tom Steenman, VP and General Manager, Intel Corporation, says, "Through our ongoing joint research and product development, Intel and Nissan are bringing an enriched driving experience to the road in a safe, effective and enjoyable way."2
This summer you be able to find this technology in the 2013 Altima. What you will find will be Google send-to-car destination navigation and Google local search, as well as Pandora Radio entertainment. We will continue to see this innovative technology in all new Nissan vehicles, but Nissan isn't going to stop there. As we write they increasingly focusing on their CARWINGS system, which is electric car based, and will found in the LEAF. This system is set to make it easier for drivers on the go to charge their battery, to keep that EV on the raod.
